What did you do?

It was a day of presentations and it was the turn of chapter 5 and 6 of the book "English for Primary Teachers". The first presentation was about how to speak more fluently, and it was done by Carla and Marta Hita and the second was about how to read in the primary school and it was done by Sonia and Marta Martín.

What did you learn?

Some of the things we learned during that day were that the best way to learn how to speak is through games. Some of the games that we can practiced in class to learn how to speak are below:
  •           Pass the ball: the students put themselves in a circle with a ball. Meanwhile a song is sounding, and the students have to throw the ball. When the music stops, the person who has the ball has to answer the questions of the teacher. For example: they have to say from a photo of a kitchen two objects they can see and the name of the space they are looking at.
  •          Other of the games that we were practicing were: Guess the mime, in which they had to find out a word through mimic; guess the word, students have to guess the word or character through clues; Guess the differences of a picture or guess the character the student have behind.

In the second presentation, we also could learnt some tips to teach how to read to primary students. We could practice in class some activities like:

  •  Classify words depending on their phonics, they created a word chart to do it.
  •  Later, you can separate the class into 5 groups by vowels and distribute the words. They have to choose the words according to their sounds and then look for the rest of the words that belong to them in the other groups.
  • We also learned the game Clever Parrot, in which the teacher shows a word for example "rabbit" and goes saying other animals until it says "rabbit" and the students say yes!
  • Another way to encourage reading in English to our students, would be for example if they have to read an interesting story that they like. We can also cut the paper where the story is in different pieces and the students have to put the story in order.
  • Another idea would be to create different colored posters with pieces of stories, and students must choose a poster of each color and read the story they have created. The result is very funny!! 

What is your opinion?

I like these types of lessons in which we can see how our classmates make presentations. Each person thinks in a different way and has different ideas, so in that way we can learn and get ideas for our future as teachers. I think that in general my colleagues have incredible ideas and I am learning a lot.

What did you do? On October 19th, we started the lesson taking a look at portfolio box. It can be a good suggestion to do it in class. Students will be able to keep in their boxes their best projects in English, or any other subject. What did you do? In this day it was shown to the last project related to the book, concretely the topic of classroom management. So, we could learn tips and ideas that might be helpful for us while we are teaching in a school. What did you learn? One method to start the class that serves as motivation for students is to circle while a song is playing, and they are passing a puppet with their eyes closed. When the music sounds, one of the children has to guess who has the puppet. An interesting thing that we could see during the exhibition was a vocabulary box in which the students can put the tricky words or simply the most difficult during the whole course. That box will be in a visible place in the classroom for the students, with the help of the teacher, frequently revise those words. What did you do? That day we had a conference, in which a principal of a rural school came to talk about how is to work there. Back to class, we talked a bit about what we thought about that conference.  We also talked a little about bloom taxonomy and started briefly the evaluation unit. What did you learn? We talked a little about repetition in elementary school children. we could learn that repeating can be a hard shock for most of the children. It is important to make the decision, studying each child individually and helping them with the change and the role of families is fundamental in these cases.
